Innovation is a key driver of business success, and it emerges when different perspectives and ideas converge—fostering creativity, challenging assumptions, and unlocking unique solutions.
In today’s interconnected world, diverse teams are at the heart of creative breakthroughs. But how do organizations harness the full potential of diversity to foster innovation? The answer lies in cultural agility—the ability to adapt, thrive, and collaborate across cultural boundaries.
What is Cultural Agility?
Cultural agility refers to the ability to adapt to and navigate various cultural contexts effectively. It encompasses understanding diverse perspectives, personal backgrounds and identities, communication styles, and problem-solving approaches, enabling individuals and teams to collaborate seamlessly in a global environment.
In today’s business landscape, where global teams tackle complex challenges, cultural agility is not just a nice-to-have, but a necessity. Teams with high cultural agility can:
- Break down cultural and communication barriers.
- Foster mutual respect and understanding among team members.
- Address challenges with innovative and inclusive solutions.
The Link Between Diverse Teams and Innovation
Diverse teams bring together a variety of perspectives, experiences, and skills, creating a constructive environment for creativity. When individuals from different cultural backgrounds collaborate, they challenge conventional thinking and approach problems from unique angles, resulting in innovative solutions.
Research supports this:
By cultivating an environment that values diversity and cultural agility, businesses can create teams that are not only innovative but also resilient and adaptable.
How Cultural Agility Drives Creative Solutions
Cultural agility equips teams to collaborate effectively, breaking down silos and fostering open communication. Here’s how it fuels creativity:
- Overcoming Groupthink: Diverse perspectives challenge the status quo, preventing teams from falling into patterns of conformity.
- Navigating Complexity: Agile teams can address nuanced, global challenges with flexibility and insight.
- Encouraging Open Dialogue: Culturally agile leaders create inclusive spaces where all voices are heard, sparking new ideas and solutions.
Strategies to build cultural agility include:
- Cross-cultural training to deepen understanding of global markets and behaviors.
- Open-minded leadership that champions diversity and models inclusivity.
- Providing access to tools that create greater cultural awareness.
- Establishing practices that encourage collaboration across borders, such as virtual brainstorming sessions and diverse project teams.

Aperian Success Story: Building Bridges Between Cultures at Kia
After Kia invested $3 billion into a vehicle production plant in Nuevo Léon, Mexico, they realized their South Korean management style and company culture caused miscommunications and tension with the new teams in Mexico.
To help their teams work better across cultural differences, we conducted customized workshops with 21 teams over seven months in three languages. Employees gained insight into ways to address specific cultural challenges and developed shared department visions and action plans.
Kia Mexico employees gained skills for productive collaboration, setting the organization up for a more inclusive workplace culture. Out of all participants, 96% agreed team performance in their department will improve based on the skills they’ve developed. One participant commented, “This experience allowed us to achieve agreements as a solid team.”
